I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving for if you celebrate this holiday. All I can say about last week’s celebration is this: Never Again! Let me hasten to explain this is not about being thankful or coming together as a family to offer our thanks and enjoy a meal together. It is about turkey. I want to state that I have never bought and cooked a turkey in my life, nor will I ever cook a turkey. However, since my mother does not go shopping any more, it fell to my lot to go and purchase, not a whole turkey, but a turkey breast. Being clueless about the finer points of turkey shopping, I went to the store in all innocence to fulfill my commission. I zoned in on the area where poultry was sold and saw The Sign-Turkey Breasts xxx a pound. Ah ha, my mission was almost complete. I snatched up my prize and paid for it. Only to realize after I got home that this was not a frozen turkey and it was days ahead of when we (Mom) would need to roast it. So, into the freeze it went. It only dawned on me then that I should have looked in the freezer section. Oh well.
Then came Disaster Day, er I mean Thanksgiving Day. The bird was cooked and rested for the appropriate amount of time. Now, who was going to carve it? I was given the thankless task of carving (butchering) that poor bird. Not only was this turkey breast the size of a chicken, it was impossible to cut a decent piece. As a Christian, I am committed not speaking swear words , but I did have some naughty thoughts and exclamations of disgust as I wrestled with that stupid turkey. That is when I told my family that I would NEVER again buy a turkey. I would recommend Cornish game hens or even a whole chicken, but I was not going to be responsible for buying and carving, (er, to be truthful, butchering) turkey in any form. Well, I would consent to ground turkey. but that is it!!!
I am so looking forward to Christmas dinner. We have agreed on a nice roast beef. Now, I wonder, which one of us is going to go shopping to select a nice roast?
Speaking of Christmas, I have a free printable download for you with a black or white background. The black background is very ink intense for a home printer, but makes a great wallpaper. Download one or both of them.
